Student Excellence Awards

On behalf of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Lloyd International Honors College awards the University's Student Excellence Award, which is UNCG's highest undergraduate academic award. The Student Excellence Award is conferred each May on Excellence Day at the Undergraduate Honors Convocation to juniors and seniors who have demonstrated outstanding performance during the course of their undergraduate academic careers. Winners of Student Excellence Awards are chosen annually by the Honors Council to recognize those seniors at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro whose academic careers are the best of the best based on demonstrations of:

  • creativity and originality,
  • motivation, initiative, and perseverance,
  • analytic, synthetic, and critical thinking skills, and
  • the ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Evidence of these accomplishments can be found both inside and outside the classroom and typically includes some combination of independent research and other creative activities, study abroad, and community involvement linked to the student's academic studies.

Minimum Nomination Criteria

Each school and department may nominate up to two students for the award. In addition, individual faculty members may nominate a student on their own. In order to be nominated, at the beginning of the spring semester in which the nomination is made, a student must:

  • Be an undergraduate student at UNCG.
  • Have at least a 3.65 cumulative GPA at UNCG.
  • Have at least 90 semester hours of total academic credit.
  • Have earned at least 45 semester hours of academic credit from UNCG.

Nomination Materials

Each nomination should include the following:

  • A completed nomination form providing all the information requested.
  • One letter of nomination that speaks to (1) the creativity and originality of the nominee, (2) the motivation, initiative, and perseverance of the nominee, (3) the analytic, synthetic, and critical thinking skills of the nominee, and (4) the ability of the nominee to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • At least one supporting letter from a faculty member.

The Invitation for Nominations and Nomination Form can be found in the PDF: Student Excellence Awards Bundle.
