Student Excellence Awards

On behalf of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Lloyd International Honors College awards the University's Student Excellence Award, which is conferred each spring on Excellence Day at the Undergraduate Honors Convocation. This award is the highest academic honor given at UNCG. Lloyd International Honors College's Honors Council honors the best of the best by selecting the winners from among the nominees. The Council bestows the award on those seniors who, through their academic careers at UNCG, have given superior demonstration of their:

  • creativity and originality,
  • motivation, initiative, and perseverance,
  • analytic, synthetic, and critical thinking skills, and
  • the ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Evidence of these accomplishments is usually demonstrated inside the classroom by the achievement of high grades and the superior completion of specific projects and assignments. Outside the classroom evidence typically includes such activities as independent research and other creative activities, study abroad, and community involvement that are linked to the student's academic studies. The nomination letter should speak to these criteria and address student performance in both settings with specific examples. As noted below, spaces are provided on the nomination letter template available on the Honors College web site for this information.

The Convocation this year will take place on the evening of May 5, 2010 (Reading Day), in the Auditorium of the Elliott University Center. Each academic department and interdisciplinary program may nominate up to two students for the award. The deadline for receiving nominations is February 23, 2010, at 5:00 p.m.

Minimum Nomination Criteria

Each school and department may nominate up to two students for the award.
Nominated students must have at least a 3.70 GPA and at least 90 s.h. (with at least 45 s.h. earned at UNCG) as of January 2010. Students who graduated in December 2009 are not eligible unless they had less than 90 s.h. in January 2009. Hours of academic credit earned abroad while a student at UNCG should be included as UNCG hours.

Nomination Materials

The deadline for receiving nominations is February 23, 2010, at 5:00 p.m. Each nomination package should include the following:

  • A completed nomination form providing all the information requested, and signed by the Head of Department or Director of the interdisciplinary program.
  • One letter of nomination that speaks to the criteria listed above. For your convenience a nomination letter template containing spaces to respond with evidence of the candidate's fulfillment of these criteria is available for download here. The form is in MSWord. Please fill in the necessary sections, add any further information you wish, and then print, sign, and submit the letter with the other required materials. If you should decide NOT to use the template, be sure you address the evaluative criteria with specificity in your letter, as these criteria are heavily weighted in the Council's final decisions.
  • At least one additional supporting letter from a faculty member.
  • The student's curriculum vitae (CV). While not required, your nominee may be disadvantaged by not submitting a CV. This document often provides additional information about the student that is useful in the Council's consideration.

Please send the completed nomination package including the signed nomination form, letter of nomination and letter of recommendation to Lloyd International Honors College's office (205 Foust Building). If you have any questions regarding the Student Excellence Awards, please call 334-5538. The Invitation for Nominations and Nomination Form can be found in the PDF: Student Excellence Awards Bundle. The nomination letter template (*Word doc) is available here.
