DESCRIPTION:Regardless of age\, health or life circumstance\, everyone has a relationship to dementia. Maybe we have a parent\, a grandparent\, a friend\, a colleague or a neighbor who is living with dementia or cognitive decline. Maybe we’re worried that we’ll be diagnosed one day. Or maybe we ignore it all together because it’ll never “happen to us.” All of which is understandable\, since the traditional view of dementia is overwhelmingly (and unnecessarily) negative and tragic. \nBut what if this didn’t have to be the case? What if we can come together to create new and more positive ways to embrace dementia? Or be more open and yes\, even joyful\, in sharing and building with our emotionality\, uncertainty and fear? Dr. Omar Ali\, dean of Lloyd International Honors College at the University of North Carolina\, Greensboro (UNCG)\, and Dr. Leah Barlow\, an African-American Studies professor located in the Liberal Studies Department at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University\, will come together\, through Let’s Learn!\, to share the history of the African diaspora you did not learn. A forum for open thought\, this is an opportunity to think about everything from maroon communities that resisted enslavement\, to the role of politics in the music and art we consume. \nDr. Ali is a founder of Let’s Learn! and Dr. Barlow is a founder of Hillmantok University. DESCRIPTION:The Pubantz Artist in Residence (AIR) Program\, named for the Founding Dean of Lloyd International Honors College\, Dr. Jerry Pubantz\, who was instrumental in the creation of this program\, promotes creativity and fosters artistic development within the Honors College community. This program encourages Honors College students with a preexisting passion for the arts to explore and develop their creative vision over a full academic year. It concludes with a showcase of the students’ work.
