Faculty Resources
Honors courses emphasize independent work, advanced study, and active student engagement beyond what is typical in regular courses. They promote discussion, collaboration, and mutual discovery between faculty and students, often involving more writing, research, and hands-on work.
Lloyd International Honors College offers 100- and 200-level cross-disciplinary Honors Seminars (HSS prefix) for the Global Honors Program. Most fulfill UNC Greensboro’s General Education requirements and incorporate international or global perspectives. All new seminars include a Student Learning Outcome focused on developing oral communication and global competency through creative, performance-based learning.
Lloyd International Honors College seeks faculty to teach Honors Seminars—an opportunity to engage motivated students, explore unique topics, or pilot innovative courses. Interested faculty should contact their department head (or dean) and the Honors College Dean. Departmental reimbursement is available.
Faculty may offer an Honors version of a regular UNC Greensboro course with approval from both the Honors College and their department or school. Honors sections should be different from the regular course. Only Honors students may enroll. Interested faculty should consult their department head (or dean) and the Honors College Dean.
Embedded Honors courses are special sections of regular UNC Greensboro classes in which Honors students attend shared lectures but follow a distinct syllabus which may have different readings and assignments and added meeting times. Interested faculty should consult their department head (or dean) and the Honors College Dean.
Honors students can earn Disciplinary Honors credit in regular UNC Greensboro courses by arranging an approved Honors contract with the instructor. While usually student-initiated, faculty and departments may create standard contracts and share them with Honors students. Enhancements often include research, presentations, fieldwork, or added meetings. All contracts are submitted by the student and require approval from the instructor, the department’s Honors Liaison, and the Honors College via InfoReady.
The Senior Honors Project is the culmination of a student’s Disciplinary Honors work and may take many forms—paper, performance, experiment, or product—but must include a written component, reflect academic scholarship, and contribute meaningfully to a field of study.
Projects vary by discipline but typically involve identifying a problem, researching it, and presenting original findings through a written or creative work. Length and format depend on the field—for example, 30–50 pages in the humanities, shorter in the sciences or arts.
Projects must be supervised and approved by a UNC Greensboro faculty member in the relevant discipline. Students usually enroll in HSS 490 and/or XXX 493 to complete the project. Those with Undergraduate Research and Creativity Assistantships must enroll in HSS 490 to earn credit.
Completed projects are archived in NC DOCKS. Faculty invited to supervise may contact Lloyd International Honors College for guidance or expectations.
Honors independent studies allow students to design personalized courses through directed readings, skill-building exercises, or self-designed research.
HSS 330: Honors Independent Study offers 1–3 credit hours and is ideal for interdisciplinary or supplemental work not requiring a full 3-credit course, though it can support other independent study formats as well.
All Honors-approved international experiences must be developed with and approved by UNC Greensboro’s Global Engagement Office (GEO). Approved trips should promote deep cultural immersion and involve significant travel outside the U.S. Interested faculty should consult GEO.
Honors Liaisons connect UNC Greensboro’s majors and programs with Lloyd International Honors College, providing students and faculty with a knowledgeable resource regarding Disciplinary Honors.
Liaisons receive Honors updates and student lists, support and advise Honors students in their department, encourage top students to join Disciplinary Honors, and help Honors students find faculty for independent studies, contract courses, and Senior Projects. Faculty interested in serving as an Honors Liaison should contact their department head.
Recognizing the extraordinary contribution faculty make to the success of the Honors College, the Honors College Faculty Fellows Program honors faculty who have taught three or more dedicated Honors courses (seminars, honors sections, and embedded sections). Fellows are honored biennially at an Honors College hosted reception and are invited year-round to participate in Honors College events and engage with students.
Recognizing the extraordinary contribution faculty make to the success of Disciplinary Honors, the Disciplinary Honors Faculty Mentors Program honors faculty who have mentored Honors students in at least ten Disciplinary Honors Contracts and/or Senior Honors Projects. Fellows are honored biennially at an Honors College hosted reception and are invited year-round to par
