Mitch went to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and earned his B.S. in Chemistry in 2002 after doing undergraduate research in the group of Professor George A. O’Doherty. His undergraduate research experience was life-changing and inspired him to pursue graduate studies and eventually become a faculty member himself. In 2008, Mitch earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University while doing research in the group of Professor Paul A. Wender. Mitch did postdoctoral research in Zurich, Switzerland in the group of Professor Erick M. Carreira at ETH-Zurich.

In 2010, Mitch started his independent academic career at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and in 2022, Mitch was named the Marie Foscue Rourk Distinguished Professor based on the many successes of his research group, including the accomplishments of more than 60 undergraduates. From the Fall of 2017 until the Summer of 2024, Mitch served as the Department Head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and from May 2024 until August of 2025 Mitch was the Interim Dean of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, a joint school between UNCG and NCA&T. In August of 2025, Mitch was named as the Interim Director of URSCO and is excited to lead a team to champion the research, scholarship, and creative activities of undergraduate students at UNCG.
